The CMU Symphonic Wind Ensemble has firmly established itself as one of America’s leading wind bands. Adhering to the original wind ensemble concept utilizing single players per part, the ensemble is composed of the most accomplished musicians in the CMU School of Music.

Conducted by
John E. Williamson, the ensemble has performed at the Midwestern Conference, most recently in December of 2015, at MENC conferences both regional and national, division and national CBDNA conferences (2014), and in historic Carnegie Hall. Noted wind composers with whom the ensemble has collaborated include Michael Colgrass, Joseph Schwantner, H. Owen Reed, Augusta Read Thomas, David Gillingham and David Maslanka. The ensemble has won praise from leading conductors and composers for its highly sensitive and deep musical renditions of sophisticated wind literature.

CMU alumni percussionist Mark Holen brings his New York Flamenco/Jazz Experience to Central Michigan University. Combining elements of Latin and Flamenco musicians, singers and dancers, the evening features Mr. Holen, guitarist Basilio Georges, and dancer Aurora Reyes.

Choral Vocal Day Guest Artist/Conductor Stephen Alltop is director of music for the Alice Millar Chapel, conductor of the Baroque Music Ensemble, and instructor in conducting, harpsichord, and oratorio at the Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music.

Dr. Alltop has guest-conducted choruses and orchestras across the United States, including the Apollo Chorus, who, under his leadership, has expanded its collaborations to include appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Opera Theater, London Symphony Orchestra, Ravinia Festival, Peninsula Music Festival, Josh Groban on Tour, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Professor Alltop will conduct the combined High School and CMU choirs in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 20

Since their founding in 2002, the River Raisin Ragtime Revue has delighted audiences across the Midwest with presentations of ragtime music, one of Americas truly original popular music styles.

As part of their mission, River Raisin has released
four outstanding CD recordings, including The Red Back Book: Standard High Class Rags, released in May 2005. This CD is the first-ever complete recording of this historic collection of fifteen classic rags published by Stark Music of St. Louis. The collection features some of ragtime’s greatest literature, including Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag,” “The Entertainer,” and “Easy Winners.”
